“The course covers a broad spectrum of core subjects within civil and structural engineering which accurately reflect the career opportunities within the industry.
What I found great about the course was its structure and how the fundamental principles of civil and structural engineering taught in the first year are built upon in more detail in subsequent years. Lectures are accompanied by tutorial sessions which provide a great opportunity to go through material with fellow students and teaching staff, who are always happy to help. The department also has great laboratories and testing facilities where experiments are carried out to prove theory taught in lectures. The Integrated Design Project in the final year was by far the best part of the course; it provided the opportunity to pull together all of the knowledge and skills gained over the course and apply it to a realistic design scenario where, in groups, you present your work at key milestones to the rest of the year group. The course contains a mixture of individual and group project work, which has its challenges, but has stood me in such good stead as I have gone into industry, as you learn how to get the best out of every member of a team. In addition to fantastic facilities, the Department offers great careers advice and links with industry. During my time at Sheffield, I was involved in the Sheffield Mentors scheme, first as a Mentee and later as a mentor. I was the 3rd year student representative on the Departmental teaching group. There are so many ways to get involved. It has been great to see how the course has evolved to keep up with technological advances and leading research and watch others thrive as a result. The civil engineering society CivSoc has grown over the years that I was at Sheffield. It is what you make of it, for example a group of my friends started up the CivSoc ladies netball team, which has been running for the past five years. There is also a CivSoc ball, other sports teams and annual tour trips. The University of Sheffield has given me more than just a degree. It has given me the confidence to believe in myself, challenge myself and make the best of every opportunity. Most of all I have left Sheffield with a diverse network of friends and industry peers. I now work in construction for Laing O’Rourke as a Graduate Engineer on the Northern Line Extension Project in London. I am also working towards my professional qualifications with the Institution of Civil Engineers. It’s an exciting time to be an engineer. I am grateful to the Department for giving me the skills to be part of it. I wanted to be a Civil Engineer to fulfil my potential and make a positive impact on the built environment and improve the lives of others.“The Department of Civil & Structural Engineering has provided a springboard to my career, starting on a major infrastructure project.”

“Studying in the Department was an incredible experience. From the first day I felt part of an interesting and innovative group of people, and through the four years of study I became close friends with many and gained a wealth of knowledge. The teaching at Sheffield is first-class and you are immediately aware that you are being taught by experts who make the learning experience both interesting and digestible. The 1st year sets you up with the basics of civil engineering and gives you the fundamental knowledge behind most engineering applications. The 2nd and 3rd years of teaching apply this knowledge to the real world and familiarise you with current conventions that can be easily applied in industry. The Master’s year focuses more on research and ultimately gives you an idea of the future of the discipline and what further work in academia would entail.”
